Joan Ferrer - Securing a place in evolving skylines

Being surrounded by history and making history of your own is one of the great benefits of working for Dow’s Building & Construction business in the UK! It’s also an opportunity to transform those years of studying for a science degree into working with materials that help drive energy saving and supports in designing of more efficient buildings.

That’s according to Technical Sales Manager, Joan Ferrer, who moved from his native Barcelona to London to help promote the benefits of extruded polystyrene insulation and sealants to customers across the UK and Ireland - as well as deal with technical questions about product features and performance.

“You can find centuries of history behind every wall and bridge living in London, and it’s so rewarding to see new buildings going up that will help create the future skyline, knowing the materials you work with could be in everything from the foundations to the rooftops,” he said.

Joan’s first job after studying for an MSc in Chemistry was within the building insulation sector, meaning he was able to put his technical knowledge to practical use straightaway. That - coupled with an Executive Masters in Marketing and Sales from the ESADE Business School in Barcelona - gives him the skills to support customers from both a technical and sales perspective about the science behind energy saving materials.

However, it’s providing a link between the materials technology and the production plant at King’s Lynn that gives him real satisfaction.

“With climate change so high on the agenda and the need for energy efficient design so crucial, I find it rewarding to be part of an industry which is committed to the development of new materials that can really make a difference to the environment in years to come,” he added. “Today, when I walk into a building that I know is warmly wrapped in STYROFOAM™ or XENERGY™ insulation it still gives me a real sense of pride!”
